What clue does Fitgerald give the reader to let him/her know myrtle will never really be able to rise up from her social class in the valley of ashes?

Tom makes Myrtle sit on a separate train as to not offend the rich East Eggers. She misuses the word appendicitis. Tom breaks her nose....the examples go on and on.
