Tom leaving Daisy

Catherine says Tom won't marry Myrtle because Daisy is Catholic and doesn't believe in divorce. Nick knows that is not true because Daisy is not Catholic. Who do you think started this lie and why?

Tom initiated the lie because he has no intention of leaving his wife for Myrtle. Myrtle is a temporary fling..... Daisy is his wife. His lie about Daisy being Catholic, and thus, unable to divorce, closes the subject of his ability to leave his wife.
