Revisit page 2 and reread the paragraph beginning with "And, after boasting this way…". What does Nick mean when he says, "If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away".

Nick scorns the wealthy, entitled people of East Egg. At the same time he is fascinated with Gatsby. Although Gatsby is very much a part of the ultra rich, Nick finds him an enigma. Nick is drawn to Gatsby despite Gatsby's enormous wealth.
