How is Gatsby an outsider at the end of chapter 7?

Myrtle is hit by a car. Nick realizes that the fatal car must have been Gatsby's Rolls-Royce. Tom presumes that Gatsby was the driver. Gatsby really has no allies to back him up, not even Daisy. Nick could defend Gatsby but Nick is inconsequential in this world.
