When Gatsby is confronting tom at the hotel, he wants daisy to say she never loved tom. daisy tells Gatsby, "you want to much. " what does Gatsby really want? does he want too much? why can't Gatsby have it?

Gatsby wants Daisy to deny ever having cared for the man she married and had a child with, something that's impossible because she did care for him. To deny that she ever cared for Tom would be a lie, not to mention, it would forever sever their relationship. Gatsby never understood that although Daisy loved him.... she was married to Tom. He wanted more than she could give because she'd never give up her status, which in turn meant that she would never give up her marriage.
