We see this when Nick gives us the names of Gatsby's guests. Really all we find out about them are the crazy and superficial antics they did at the parties. Really none of these people knew or cared about Gatsby. It symbolized the emptiness of Gatsby's relationships with the people that have used his hospitality all these years.
