Slagle is the speaker, obviously one of Gatsby's business partners calling about a deal gone sour. This is significant because we once again have corroboration that Gatsby's business dealings aren't on the up and up, and also because we once again have someone who wants nothing to do with the situation once Gatsby's death becomes known. Gatsby has business associates.... they are not friends.
