The speaker is Daisy. The plot falls in line with her description of marriage and her negative views on how women are treated. This is significant because she wishes her daughter to be a fool.... completely oblivious to what Daisy sees as a woman's role, the expectation of submission, and the feelings of being a second class citizen. This is the reason she falls for Gatsby..... she wants to be loved, be important, and to be respected.
