The Great Gatsby

Nick says, "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired."

What does Nick mean? How does each character in the novel fit into this?

When Nick says, "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired, he means that everyone fits into these categories. People look for others to pursue in order to validate themselves. There is always this exchange of energy. Gatsby is pursuing Daisy; Nick is pursuing Jordan and Gatsby. People like Tom and Jordan are busy all the time within their own bubble of a world. The tired just do nothing like Daisy often does.
