What happened to the friendship between Nick and Tom?why?

I would not consider Nick and Tom really having a friendship. Tom is overbearing and crass. He finds Nick an acceptable "common man" novelty that exists outside of the rich establishment. I don't think Nick ever really liked Tom and thinks even less of him by the story's conclusion.
