Lucrative bonds in chapter 5

Nick refuses because he does not want to be indebted to Gatsby for any reason and he somehow feels the offer and the work that Gatsby would expect would obligate him to do a favor for Gatsby. He cuts Gatsby off immediately and tells him he simply cannot take on any additional work at this time.
