Gatsby achieves the American dream. He comes from a humble background to achieve astounding wealth. Gatsby, however, cannot buy or control time. He tries to erase the five years he was apart from Daisy and carry on like nothing happened in those years. Gatsby cannot do this: he builds his hopes and dreams of Daisy on illusions.
