The American Dream is always focused on improving one's station in life; certainly Gatsby, in whatever manner, has become wealthy beyond his wildest hopes and is now living proof that in America one can do better in life. The '20s were a time when everyone was upbeat and positive about the economy, life, and just the ability to improve. The idea of the American Dream was especially prevalent, as proven by how low the country sank during the Great Depression when no one was able to achieve the American Dream after years of living well.
