What is the significance of gatsby's boyhood copy of hopalong cassidy?

Gatsby's father, pulls out an old copy of Hopalong Cassidy. This fictional character also represented the spirit of the American Dream, the spirit of succeeding despite the odds. On the back of the magazine were meticulous notes of Gatsby's for self improvement. He did this as a boy.
