The whole career idea shaped the man. Gatsby kept his career secret as to appear legitimate to others. Nick was slowly getting started in his career but gets sidetracked into Gatsb'y's life. Nick, like many characters, live vicariously through Gatsby. It is a lifestyle that their careers will never afford them.
