Describe the effect of rain on the plot?

the rain seems to cool things down........ romance, tension, arousal, anger, ect.

There is heavy rain during the first part of the meeting between Daisy and Gatsby. This is type of a metaphor for the way things are going between the two of them. Rain in the plot symbolizes awkward situation where both of them are not comfortable.
