The Great Gatsby

Comment on how the following statement shows nick's relationship to time

"I was thirty. Before me stretched the portentous menacing road of a new decade... Thirty-the promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning brief-case of enthusiasm, thinning air."

Nick is visualizing his future here. Men were often married before thirty in the 20's, something not thought of so often today. Thus, he's looking to the next decade of his life and envisioning his friends all being married, boredom, and life with a lot less gusto. Sounds like he's not exactly excited about the future.
