The New York apartment reveals that Tom has every intention of "keeping" Myrtle for a long period of time. It is a place to carry on his liasons without detection..... and a place to keep his mistress.

In regard to Myrtle, we can see that her apartment is her home away from home. She's chosen furniture she loves with no thought as to how it will work in the room, thus, the room is crowded and uncomfortable. Her apartment is as disheveled as her life.
