Fitzgerald is setting the stage in this chapter.... contrasting Tom's home with Daisy and his apartment with Myrtle. When we learn about Tom's home it is draped in white, the evening is clear, and the night is lit by candlelight. His New York apartment, however, is hazy.... drab.... dirty.... reflecting Tom's affair with another woman.
