Chapter Two serves to give us additional information about our characters, as well as to answer questions about specific things that were exposed in Chapter One. We meet Tom and his girlfriend. We learn that his girlfriend, Myrtle, has a husband. We learn that he keeps an apartment on the side for their trysts, that Nick is uncomfortable with what he learns, and that Myrtle seems to expect more out of the relationship than Tom has to offer.

We also learn more about the setting.... the socioeconomic changes that seem to jump up without warning.
