At the end of chapter 6, Nick describes Gatsby kissing Daisy in Louisville five years before. What is Gatsby giving up when he kisses her? Why?

At the end of Chapter Six, we see Gatsby giving up the illusion...... it was a good dream, but the girl he'd been pining for had only existed in a memory.
