I think Nick is trying not to lose himself in this superficial excess that is East Egg. Nick is attracted to Daisy but notes that she is "incurably dishonest." Nick tries to set himself apart from Daisy and all these overly wealthy people by stating his own humble modesty, "I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known."
