Why would Tom want to divorce Daisy?  They are two of a kind--uppity, rich, and careless.  As Nick says, they make messes and leave them for someone else to clean up.  Tom wants to have Daisy and Myrtle too.  Daisy is his trophy; Myrtle is his toy.  Of course, he doesn't want Daisy to have a toy, though.

I think the irony of Gatsby's death is that Daisy was driving the car that killed Myrtle, but he decides to cover for her.  Jay will do anything for this woman who doesn't really care about him--just about his wealth.  While Tom and Daisy are busy plotting a way to get out of this mess, Jay dies, and the Buchanans simply dance away.
