corruption and decline of the american dream
Gatsby has it all - but what is it worth? In the end he loses it all.
The value system in Gatsby is grossly materialistic. In this book, you are what you drive, for example. Ironically, it is the lowly auto mechanic who does Gatsby in. Recall the scene where Daisy cries over the beautiful shirts of Gatsby. Does she ever cry about any person? even the woman she ran over and killed with the car? If you define 'The American Dream' as owning your own home, look at the descriptions given to Gatsby's house and Tom and Daisy's place.
