The historical background is included as a social criticism. Steinbeck's purpose was to present California's history, whereas the land originally considered to have been stolen from the Mexicans by squatters was now a case of migrant farmers stealing land from the wealthy landowners. He shows how history repeats itself over time, and how those who are hungry will never understand why others have so much they do not use.
