The Battle Hymn of the Republic speaks to God's justice and victory over oppression. In this case, the hymn was a symbol of the Northern cause in the Civil War. In the novel, the oppressors are the banks and the landowners. The people who work the lands, lose their homes. The migrant workers are treated no better than slaves. This title is significant because it gives new meaning to the song.
