What is the significance of Ma's quote to the story.

In chapter 18 - "Ma was silent a long time. 'Family's fallin' apart,'she said. 'I don't know. Seems like I can't think no more. I jus' cant think. They's too much."

This quote allows us a glimpse into Ma's desperation. Her family is all that matters to her, and she is the "rock" of the family. If ma gives up, who will go on?
