Tom is told that all skinners do something to occupy themselves how does knowing this affect Tom?

Skinner (truck drivers) often composed poetry to pass the time.

"I've knew guys that done screwy things while they're drivin' trucks. I remember a guy use' to make up poetry. It passed the time."

Joad doesn't seem to be affected by anything the driver says. In fact, the more he tries to draw Tom into conversation, the lass he reacts.
