The Grapes of Wrath

Pa planned the trip and guided the family through to California. However, when reached there he found himself redundant and he retired back to himself. How do you understand this? What is the message behind it? And would you do anything else different from what he did?

Pa found that he no longer could make decisions for the family like he used to. The family was at the complete mercy of the companies that hired them. He was not young and strong so he felt redundant. He was another mouth to feed. Pa feels emasculated and withdraws into himself. I think the message behind has to do with the complete abandonment that families like the Joads felt by the American people. I think Pa was braver than I would have been at his age. I would be happy to get as far as he did.
