How would you respond to someone who says "The Grapes of Wrath" ends in despair?

I would tell them that they were wrong. At the conclusion of the story, Rose of Sharon serves as a symbol of hope and compassion. And as a group, the characters have bonded and worked together to assist each other and survive together. Despair alludes to hopelessness, and the end of this story does not leave the reader without hope.
