I think this is when the Joads go to buy a few slices of bread. They can't afford a loaf so they try to buy only a few slices. The owner of the store and the waitress give them the loaf for next to nothing. I believe the children get some candy too. This was one of the rare times that the Joad family is treated well in the book.
