How is it that people are starving when fruit is overabundant? Why do the owners destroy the surplus?

The owners do not want an overabundance of fruit because it drives the price down and cuts into profits. Thus, the owners were destroying their surplus fruit in order to keep their profits and rid themselves of the overabundance of migrant workers the Dust Bowl had brought their way.
