In a nutshell; the family loses its home, is forced to accept the hospitality of family, experiences exploitation, and chases the dream of starting over in California. Over the course of their journey, they lose integral parts of their family, and even the family dog. They are harassed by police, live in a government camp because there's nowhere else to go, work as laborers in the fields, find themselves stuck in a flood...... Ma and Pa go on, Tom leaves the family, Rose of Sharon is deserted, and in the end we see the birth of her baby. Everything has changed....
