The whole old man breast feeding on Rose is at play here. Even though Rose's child has just died, she feeds a starving man who can no longer eat solids. Rose becomes a Mary-figure showing intense sacrifice so that another, a stranger, may live a little longer. Is this the beginning of social change? I'm really not sure.
