Actually Ma Joad appears to be the principal victim of the move to California. Casy notices that she looks ill from the recent events, and only she is the only one who appears to have regrets. In chapter ten, Ma worries that California isn't going to be a place of milk and honey, an Eden. They flyers convey a sense of a Biblical promised land for the meek. Somehow Ma doesn't think the meek are going to inherit anything in California.
