The bankers explain that the bank is like a monster that needs to keep growing (expanding), and the only thing that makes growth possible is profit. The bank owns the land, and if the tenants can't provide a profit, they are no good to the monster. Thus, the foreclosure of mortgages and driving the farmers off their land is nothing personal, it's caused by the monster.
