The migrant workers are treated badly in both the film and the book. The workers are paid less than what it costs to live. The company charges the workers to live in their camps. They make the workers buy company food. The workers do not even make enough to cover their living expenses. You might consider migrant workers who come to America to pick fruit and do other menial labor. Many of these workers are working illegally and, much like the Joads, are exploited by their employers.
