1. Ma is the matriarch of family. She keeps them together. She has more authority than Pa Joad. She seems to keep them going somehow.

2. Ma is heartbroken. She thinks it is a crime but the people must endure.

3. Casey is no longer a preacher. He lost his faith many years ago and turned to the bottle instead.
