The traditional structure of the farm family is breaking down. Men no longer have the responsibility of farm work so they feel hopeless. Casey begins the change in social structure by wanting to help Ma salt the pork, "It's all work. They's too much of it to split it up to men's or women's work." Men now need to share domestic duties that were once the domain of women.
