Pa is an important character in the novel. When we first meet him, he is self-assured and organized. He is the family leader. Over the course of the novel, we see pa fall apart. The hardships take their toll on him, and he suffers from doubt and exhaustion. As Pa becomes weaker, Ma steps in to take over his role. By the end of the novel, he in unable to make decisions and looks to Ma for guidance.
