Does anyone know why Rose of Sharon smiles "mysteriously" at the end?

She smiles mysteriously because she has finally realised that although the milk was meant for her baby, it is better to help everyone than just the ones you have a family obligation to.

I'm assuming this response is months too later lol.

I would also suggest that that sweet mystery of giving life, that mothers feel as they nurse their children, is finally realized in a woman who knew all along that she would miss out on it with this child. Also, that that feeling rekindled hope within, not only to go on with her life, but that she may one day find her own child in her arms.
