Why John Downwell wants to be like Edward even he commits suicide?

The narrator is an American and Edward is an English man so why he desires to be similar Edward. Even he knows that Edward had an affair with her wife Florence ; the reason why Florence committed suicide is Edward's affair with an another woman. Why ?

I would think that John is jealous of his romantic entanglement, especially the fact that his wife was having an affair with Edward. You have to remember that John had never consumated his marriage to Florence.
