Wang Lung becomes increasingly irritated with O'lan. He has become a wealthy landowner, and he does not seem to see things as they were before. Things are not good enough for him, including his wife. He sees her as nothing but an ordinary, quiet, non-descript burden. She doesn't excite him; she's nothing more than someone who works and provides him with sons. Wang Lung has decided he wants some excitement.
