I've always looked to Wang Lung's father as the most level headed character in the story. He's taken care of the land all of his life, and he has instilled that same regard in his son. When O'lan came into their household, he was happy to have her and grateful for her and shown respect by him every single day. Whether the family was experiencing povery or wealth, the father stayed the same. All he ever wanted was enough, and to me, that's the kind of person who has a good relationship with money.
