There are several themes in this novel. Any way you state them, though, they focus on the consequences of love and the ways in which love can destroy or hurt people. The members of different social classes cannot love one another because society forbids such a love. The Indian society and its caste system only allows love between people in certain societal levels. The twins are unable to love or be loved because no one can understand their cultural backgrounds; the only are comfortable with one another. Many of the characters are betrayed by someone they love in this story. Love can have many negative consequences and the story focuses on such consequences.
