Subaltern is a term that commonly refers to persons who are socially, politically, and geographically outside of the hegemonic power structure. This is a pretty huge motif within Roy's novel. It is a little to big for this forum. Consider the role of women, caste and family hierarchy. Power structure whether sexual, economic, religious or regional pervades this novel. There are some academic articled that you can "Google" on this on-line.
