why is it appropriate for the play and his character that Tom remain until he is finally fired from his job?

As long as Tom had a job, he was both expected and well able to take care of his family. To have walked away would have been the ultimate selfishness. Once fired, Tom had no real reason to stay. Other jobs could be found in numerous places..... being fired gave him freedom.
