The American Dream for Amanda Wingfield is that her children are successful. Laura needs to be married and have a family. Tom needs to be educated and have a high paying job. Laura's view of the American Dream is, in fact, just a dream. She lives a fanasty life that promises no chance at reality. Tom's dream is that of adventure and travel.
