The Glass Menagerie

The term home girl

It is used twice in the play by Amanda and Jim. What are their meanings of the term, and to whom does the term-as-used apply?

This term is used to describe Tom's sister Laura is scene four. He uses it to describe her when Amanda comments that things have to be taken care of for her....... that Tom won't be free until his sister is married with a husband and home of her own. The most important meaning for this "name" would be Tom's declaration that his sister is an "old maid," an unmarried daughter who is and will be staying "home."
