IS there any indication that Laura will be buried or survive by the sudden revelatation of finding out Jim is engaged?

I think buried is a bit dramatic. She might be figuratively "buried" in the coffin that is a "hard-knock" life; certainly she will not have any kind of a life that the reader can identify with. But, as Tom indicates, she is not forgotten, so she does survive.
